MONTGOMERY — The Fulshear Chargers will send their first golfer to the state competition since 2019 after Jace Parsell shot 13-over for a 12th-place finish.
The Golf Club at Margaritaville Lake Resort hosted the Region III-5A Championships, where Fulshear and Foster represented Lamar Consolidated ISD.
The girls competed on Wednesday and Thursday, so full results will be available in the Sunday edition of The Herald.
The state tournament will occur at Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown on April 29-30.
Fulshear’s Jace Parsell was the only local golfer to make it past the regionals. The junior finished 13-over on the par 71 course, shooting a 78 on day one and a 77 on day two.
Parsell becomes the first Fulshear Charger to qualify for the state competition since 2019 when Tristan Gabbard placed second in state.
“I feel proud to represent our school, especially the people on our golf team,” Parsell said. “Everyone around me has believed in me, especially my coach, who constantly reminded me that I was going to do it and that I had the skills. My father, mainly, has pushed me through every up and down to get to this point and has never left my side since the day we started.”
Head coach Chris Morse has seen Parsell become one of Texas’s best young golfers.
“His work ethic is outrageous, and you see him on the course all the time,” Morse said. “He’s all-in 150%. He’s been at the driving ranges and the putting greens all offseason. It’s a great feeling to be back.”
Eli Hanneken finished at 20-over, shooting 84 on Monday and 78 on Tuesday, with Sailor Lyons behind him at 22-over. Lyons had a good day on Monday, shooting 78, but had a setback on Tuesday with an 86.
Grayson Moers finished at 29-over, concluding round one with an 81 and round two with a 90, while Cameron Crabtree was at 59-over.
The Chargers did not qualify as a team after tying Belton for sixth place at 84-over. Collectively, the Chargers shot 37-over on Monday but faced more struggles on Tuesday, shooting 47-over.
Although most of the Charger golfers were disappointed with how they ended the tournament, it did not take away from Morse’s pride in another successful end to the season.
“We had a couple of kids struggle, but we had others there to help them out,” Morse said. “We are a good team that bonded really well this season. The course played extremely difficult for everyone, and I even had one of our kids apologize for his performance. There is no need to apologize because I’ve been so blessed to have great kids and great parents supporting us, and I couldn’t ask for more from them.”
It was another successful season for Foster golf, with head coach Robert McConnell touting his Falcons’ journey to Margaritaville.
The Falcons overcame early-season struggles to reach this level and were coming off their best three rounds of the season in the district tournament.
“We knew we had a really good team this season,” McConnell said. “We played the golf that we knew we were capable of playing. We earned the most medals in the district, and to be here is always our goal. Anything extra is icing on the cake.”
Colby Hemenes was the Falcons’ best finisher at 17-over. Hemenes shot consistently, scoring 79 on Monday and 80 on Tuesday.
Bricen Finch was tied for 29th, shooting 20-over after finishing at 79 on Monday and 83 on Tuesday.
Brady Baxmann was 28-over after finishing with an 83 on Monday, followed by an 87 on Tuesday.
Bradyn Lindley shot 31-over in the tournament with a Monday score of 89 and a better effort on Tuesday at 84.
Other Falcons competing included Everett Unsin at 33-over and Kade Barnes at 35-over.
The Falcons missed the state competition, finishing in eighth place at 96-over. The Falcons played consistently over the two-day tournament, shooting 46-over on Monday and 50-over on Tuesday.
Despite the end of the season, McConnell’s excitement about the program’s continued success did not diminish it.
“We played fantastic golf, and it was a great end to the season,” McConnell said. “Everyone did what was expected of them, so that’s all I can ask for.”
