When Bob wanted to enlist in the military, he was too young, so he lied about his age and became a private in the Army anyway. A World War II veteran, Bob served in Company B, 299th Engineer Combat Battalion. They were among the first troops to land in Normandy at Utah Beach on D-Day. During his tour of duty, he was captured on December 21, 1944 by the Germans in Martalange, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. As prisoners, they walked from there to Germany, never having a change of clothes or very much to eat. On December 28, 2023, he was awarded the Legion of Honor Merit from the French Government for his part in Liberating France from Germany.

After returning from the war, Bob worked as a carpenter, then in oilfields around Thompson and Arcola and finally worked and retired from Texas Instruments in Stafford. Throughout the years, Bob was generous with his time volunteering at the annual church bazaars, ushering for Sunday services, giving fellow veterans rides to their appointments at the VA hospital in Houston, visiting nursing homes, wrapping cookies and fruit for patients at the VA hospital, served as a volunteer at both the VA and Oak Bend Hospitals and did numerous other charitable deeds. He and Bessie traveled the country visiting almost every state and still found time for many hours of dancing across dance floors in and around Fort Bend County along with many domino games with family & friends.

Bob was a life member of the following organizations: VFW Chapter 3903, Gulf Coast Chapter of EX-POWs in Houston, the DAV Chapter 233, American Legion Post 271, and Knights of Columbus 2801. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
