Leona Emma Kueck Gutowsky

One of 6 children, Leona Emma Kueck Gutowsky was born on November 8, 1930 in Rosenberg to John William Kueck and Lillie Duesterhoeft Kueck.

After a valiant fight with cancer, she passed away April 4, 2024 at her home at the age of 93.

After graduating from Rosenberg High School in 1948, Leona began her working career at Rosenberg Telephone Company as a switchboard operator.

Her second career began a few years later as a library aid at Travis Elementary, which she held until she retired and became a fulltime homemaker.

She married her first and only love, James Victor Gutowsky, on November 9, 1952 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg.

In early years, Leona was an active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, participating in various women’s ministry programs.

She volunteered for many years as a Pink Lady at the Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital gift shop.

She was an avid seamstress making a broad array of clothing for herself, her husband and children.

Her hobbies included needlepoint, crochet and other craft work, reading and crossword puzzles.

She got most enjoyment from playing a variety of table games including dominos, canasta, Yahtzee, Sequence and any other opportunity to join friends and family around the game table.

Many nights she could be found at local KC, VFW and American Legion halls enjoying bingo.

Most recently, a jigsaw puzzle could always be found on her dining room table where any visitor was invited to find just the right fit for a piece to the puzzle.

Leona and James enjoyed gliding across the dance floor to waltzes, polkas and big band music.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Lillie Kueck, her husband James V. Gutowsky Sr., sister Evelyn Kueck Oberhoff, brothers Edwin Kueck, Melvin Kueck, and Lonnie Kueck and grandchildren Brian Walleck and Shelby Walleck.
