Esteban “Chore/Shorty" Suarez

Esteban “Chore/Shorty” Suarez, 87, passed away on March 13, 2024, surrounded by his family. His loss was entirely unexpected, and his family is profoundly saddened. His life was centered on family and filled with joy and happiness.

Esteban was born in San Benito, Texas, on October 27, 1936, to Jose and Ascencion Suarez. He was one of ten children: He attended San Benito High School, where he quickly found the love for his San Benito greyhounds “Purple and Gold Forever!” More importantly, he found the love of his life, Ernestina “Tina” Arguello. They were young and poor but rich in their commitment to each other and building a strong family. They were married for 67 years and raised eight children. Despite humble beginnings, he excelled in his career building bridges across Texas. He took pride in his work and never missed an opportunity to share stories and highlight the significance of each bridge he built. Like the bridges he built, the relationships with people and his faith were concrete.

He had a competitive spirit and a strong love for sports. He was a diehard Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros, and Texas A&M fan. He picked up competitive running, making a name for himself by placing in several 5K and 10K competitions. He and Tina loved bowling and competed in numerous leagues. Countless weekends were spent bowling with the entire family and playing golf, basketball, volleyball, kickball, croquet, and many other sports. He skillfully navigated his calendar for the opportunity to cheer on his grandchildren at their sporting events, reminding each one to “play to win!” He treasured his time playing and being with his family. He routinely called his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to check in and stay connected to what was important in their lives.

In his final moments, his family surrounded him, which always brought him peace. The greatest source of pride was his children Eric Suarez (Monica), Edna Guebara, Elizabeth “Lisa” Acosta (deceased), Eloy Suarez (Frances), Esteban Suarez Jr. (Belinda), Esther Chance (Collin), Sylvia Latapie (Matt), and Lionel Suarez (Tammy), his 19 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. His legacy is the devotion, love, and support to his family, his brothers and sisters and their families, extended family, and friends.
