An ‘80s comedic retelling of Frankenstein initially does not sound as good as an audience might think, but don’t underestimate “Lisa Frankenstein.” The movie is directed by Zelda Williams (Robin Williams’s daughter).

“Lisa Frankenstein” stars actress Kathryn Newton (“Freaky”, “Ant-Man” and “Detective Pikachu”) and Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”, “Big Daddy” and “Five Feet Apart”) and is a monstrous love story.

The film opens with Lisa Swallows (Newton) trying to assimilate into her new life with her step-sister, step-mother and father.

Spending her spare time at the abandoned graveyard, Lisa’s wishes of being dead soon rise from the grave itself.

An unexpected lighting storm causes a Victorian gentleman (Sprouse) to rise from the dead and the two go on a murder spree to find human body parts for the newly risen.

Their spree soon catches up to the duo as residents notice people going missing.

The film is filled with comedic puns, references to the ‘80s and crimped hair. “Lisa Frankenstein” writer Diablo Cody also wrote “Jennifer’s Body” and said the two films exist in the same universe.

“Lisa Frankenstein” resembles “Frankenstein” with the common theme that the creator is driven to madness.

My complaint with the movie is the acting choice of Cole Sprouse. Sprouse is the film’s main lead and I felt that his zombie impersonation was over the top.

On the contrary, Sprouse’s character did not have a single line of dialogue so to understand the emotion behind his character was all body language.

The movie was a cute watch with not a lot of meaning behind the message.

6/10.
