| State Sen. Kyle Janek, R-Houston, resigned his position Wednesday, reportedly handing Gov. Rick Perry his letter of resignation over lunch.
It was no surprise, as Janek had announced his intentions earlier this year - but now the focus becomes who will replace the senator.
Janek's District 17 includes portions of Fort Bend - reaching from Sugar Land to Fairchilds - Brazoria, Harris, Galveston, Chambers and Jefferson counties.
An anesthesiologist, Janek said he is stepping down to spend more time with his family. He has hinted he might become a lobbyist.
The resignation clears the way for a crowded ballot on Nov. 4 as hopeful replacements will square off in an unusual open election.
The race will be open to multiple candidates from both the Republican and Democratic parties. If no one gets a majority vote, a run-off will be necessary.
The governor, however, can choose a successor in the meantime if he decides to declare the matter an emergency.
When Janek first announced his decision in January, some of the prospects for replacements included District 26 State Rep. Charlie Howard, Sugar Land Mayor David Wallace and TV personality Spencer Tillman.
