| Talk about a family trip.
On March 14, a father and daughter hit the road to travel more than 1,000 miles to support a loved one who is currently battling a rare form of cancer. Instead of driving or flying, however, this duo biked the entire way - they call it Cranking for a Cure.
Cranking for a Cure is the benefit bicycle ride George Busch started in order to raise money for his sister, Martha Farris, who is battling adrenal cortical carcinoma (ACC), a rare and aggressive cancer of the adrenal glands, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Busch said every eight weeks, Farris makes a trip to undergo treatment costing approximately $1,200 each time, which is causing a financial and emotional burden on her family.
So, to show Farris her family is pulling for her, they decided to pedal for her - from Louisville, Ky., to Sugar Land.
George Busch, 54, and his daughter Amy Busch, 26, biked from their hometown of Louisville and were joined in Texas by his other sister, Linda Edmonds, 56.
George predicted the trip to take three to four weeks, but on April 2, less than three weeks after their original departure date, the trio pulled into Sugar Land, a little flushed, a little sweaty but in the highest of spirits.
“We did it,” said Edmonds. “This is a proud moment.”
Although the original ending destination was Houston, the trio ended in Sugar Land because Houston's streets were too congested and because George's other daughter lives there.
“We're going to go to my daughter's house, rest, eat and party,” George said. “Then we're all going to go visit Martha.”
More than $30,000 was raised for Farris' medical expenses, of which 35 percent will be donated to M.D. Anderson for ACC cancer research, George Busch said.
“ It's important for this cancer to be studied,” he said. “Especially for us.”
