  • Women's Center hosting Pirates and Parrots event

    Monday, March 24, 2008 4:15 PM CDT

Boogie 2008 presents “Pirates and Parrots” from 6:30 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, March 29 at the Stafford Centre.

Presented by The West Law Firm, the Boogie crew is prepared to raise the largest “loot” in history to benefit the Women's Center.

Highlighting the evening's festivities will be the ultimate costume contest and treasure hunt. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in their best pirate gear as there will be picture taking opportunities with “Captain Jack Sparrow” and “Elizabeth Swann”, characters from the hit film “Pirates of the Caribbean”.

Katie Armiger will kick off the night with a patriotic song, followed by the Sweetwater Dance Troupe. Dinner will be provided by Safari Texas Ranch. New to this venue, artists providing entertainment throughout the night will be The Big Time Band from Austin.

The pirates and parrots theme continues with decorations including the pirate boat built by title sponsor, Scott West, and sons Gunner and Garret. The boat, entered in the Fort Bend County Fair Parade, took second-place honors in the non-profit category.

Silent and live auction items will include black Tahitian pearls, trips to Mexico and Colorado, sports packages and a commemorative quilt designed by the shelter kids and co-chair Roberta Avery. A custom built playhouse awaits a lucky winner.

Tickets are $75. Sponsorships are still available ranging from $750 to $10,000. Auction items are still needed. Contact Liz Moreno at 281.494.4545 or boogie@fortbendwomenscenter.org to reserve your table or purchase tickets.

Proceeds from this event provide emergency shelter, crisis intervention, counseling and other support services to victims of family violence and sexual assault and their children to achieve safety and self-sufficiency.

In 2007, the Women's Center served over 458 domestic violence survivors (women and children) in the shelter and 1,350 in the Aftercare Program. A 5 percent increase over 2006.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence or sexual assault, please call the Center's 24-hour Hotline at 281.342.4357 (HELP).
