| Making sure the new high school's design and layout are unique is one of the concerns of Needville ISD and its building contractor.
But so is the manner in which the school is built.
An SHW Construction representative convinced the school board to use a more personal method to choose construction bids. Instead of simply “opening up envelopes” and choosing the lowest bid, the board will take it a step further - trustees will interview bidders in a quest not only for the lowest bid, but also for the best quality contractors.
Besides the high school update Wednesday night, SHW also reported that the estimate for the Needville Middle School roof repair project is $1.2 million, which is less than expected, and currently five bidders want the project.
The board will receive bids on the repair project by Jan. 10, with hopes of having a contractor nailed down by Jan. 16.
Other items covered at Wednesday's board meeting included a presentation by NISD superintendent Curtis Rhodes regarding the Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS), which he said shows “the district is doing quite well.”
Rhodes said AEIS allows educators to see where improvements need to be made and where students are excelling.
“It shows us how to make sure each student is successful,” he said.
