A Houston area man was badly burned when he was doused with sulfuric acid Saturday at the Brazos Valley Energy Power Plant in the Richmond area. The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m.

The incident occurred when the off-loading hose broke as a truck driver and a plant employee were off-loading sulfuric acid into a tank from the tanker and caused 500 gallons of 93 percent sulfuric acid to spill, according to Terriann Carlson, Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman. She said the truck driver, Vincent Lewis, 44, of the Houston area, obtained considerable chemical burns on over 90 percent of his body and was flown by helicopter to Hermann Memorial Hospital-The Medical Center. As of late Saturday evening, Lewis was admitted to the burn unit in stable condition.

The power plant employee, Allen Perez, 31, of the West Columbia area, received chemical burns, but not as severe, and was transported by EMS to OakBend Medical Center.

Richmond Fire Chief Stephen Noto said fire units from Richmond, Rosenberg, Pecan Grove and Sugar Land responded to the scene. The Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management and Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office also responded.
