| Attorney and three-term city Councilman Russell Jones has announced his entry into the 2008 race for Sugar Land mayor.
“I offer the citizens strength of leadership and breadth of experience that no other candidate can,” said Jones. “I am not the hand-picked candidate of any special interest group.”
Incumbent Mayor David Wallace will not seek re-election. Earlier this year, former city Councilman James Thompson filed for the office. Sugar Land races are non-partisan, through both candidates are active with the Republican Party.
Together with his wife, Thelma, Jones is principal of a Sugar Land real estate and commercial law firm and a title company.
A native Texan and lifelong resident of the Houston area, Jones has been married for 36 years and raised two daughters in Fort Bend County. They are members of Christ United Methodist Church.
Jones received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Johns Hopkins University and his law degree from the University of Houston.
A member of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council, Jones previously served as a city councilman in Missouri City and chaired the Fort Bend Subsidence District for many years. He is a past president of Oyster Creek Rotary Club.
Jones is a director of Rio Bend, a unique development for foster children in Richmond. He has served as a director and a co-founder of the Fort Bend Youth Foundation, Fort Bend YMCA and Child Advocates of Fort Bend.
