| The race for the Rosenberg City Council District 2 position will see two candidates competing for the post in the May 12 election.
Incumbent Joe G. Segura, a Rosenberg native who has served the term on and off since 1992, is being challenged by Karen Mendoza, a 35-year Rosenberg resident.
Mendoza, 38, is a graduate of the Bradford School of Business, attended Houston Community College and currently a student pursuing a BBS in business administration at Dallas Baptist University.
As a candidate, Mendoza said if elected, she promises to listen to citizens' concerns, represent the citizens to the fullest of her abilities and improve the community by preserving its history and diversity.
"We must not forget about the old and only concentrate on the new sections of our town," she said. "We need to look at our town as a whole. I am a person who is motivated to achieve a goal which is to promote, research, review and improve District 2 and the city of Rosenberg. We need to see the beauty in our own backyard."
Mendoza has three children, Manuel, 19, Diana, 13, and Joseph, 10. She has worked with the Texas Department of Transortation and is currently employed with AT&T, where she has worked on the VP consumer support operations staff for 10 years.
Segura, 54, said he thinks he would be an ideal candidate for reelection because of the extensive experience he's had serving the city of Rosenberg in the past.
As a current council member, Segura said he takes his position seriously, especially now with the vast amount of growth the city is experiencing, and he hopes to continue being involved in its growth.
"We have a strong city council that is focused on tackling the expansion and development of the city," he said. "At the same time, we also have to take care of the older parts of the city. I've been involved with the 2006 bond election and the construction of Blume Road, something I've been working on for many years, and I'd like to continue being involved."
Segura is married to his wife, Irma, of 31 years, and they have one son, Joe Jr., and one grandson.
District 2 encompasses the area inside State Highway 36 to Blume Road on the west, and to the Brazos park area to the north.
