| The Fort Bend County Women's Center's annual Music Fest will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Stafford Centre, 10505 Cash Rd., just off FM 1092 (Murphy Road).
Presented by Fluor Corporation, this year's event features the music of Blood, Sweat & Tears; and Chuck Negron, formerly of Three Dog Night; and Johnny & the Convertibles.
The latter is the opening act, and the band's bass guitarist, Bruce Mercer, will serve as 2007 president of the Women's Center's board of directors. He has volunteered with the Women's Center as a board member for years.
As a fan of both headlining bands, Mercer said he is looking forward to warming up the stage for Blood, Sweat & Tears.
"This is an exciting opportunity for us as a band as well as for the Women's Center," he said. "This is the first time that Music Fest has been at the Stafford Centre, which is a great venue, and we're looking forward to having a lot of fun."
Mercer and the other members of Johnny & the Convertibles have been performing '50s and '60s hits for more than 23 years. Their first gig was a family party "just for fun," but guests quickly wanted to book them for upcoming events.
"We were all pretty much in shock because we were just messing around and having fun," Mercer recalled.
For the past 15 years, Johnny & the Convertibles has been serving as house band for radio station KNUZ, opening for such famous acts as The Platters, Roy Head and Frankie Ford.
Mercer is a banker, lead singer Johnny Michalek owns an insurance claims company, guitarist Mike Moore is a worship minister and drummer Frank Pizzitola negotiates rights-of-way for pipeline companies. All four are happy to be able to help the Women's Center by performing at the 2006 Music Fest.
"I'm very excited to be a part of this because the Women's Center has an incredible mission," Mercer said. "Music Fest is a great vehicle to help us bring awareness to domestic violence in our community and to help us raise money to assist victims and their children."
Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the Stafford Centre's Web site at www.staffordcentre.com or by calling the box office at 281-208-6900.
