The Ninth Annual Beasley Bash will be held Friday and Saturday, beginning with a free street dance by Classified Country from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday in the barbecue cook-off area between Second and Third streets, next to Loop 540.

The fun will continue Saturday, with Pure Texas DJs providing music throughout the day on the main stage at the George Pavilion at the intersection of Fourth Street and Avenue G, one block behind the fire station.

Returning as emcee for Saturday's stage activities will be the former radio station KFRD DJs Bud Smith and Larry Girven.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. at the pavilion, followed by the Little Miss Contest at 11:30 a.m., Junior Miss Contest at noon and the Queen's Contest at 12:30 p.m.

The Talent Contest will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the pavilion, with KILT 100.3 FM DJ Rowdy Yates serving as one of the judges. Jane Turner's Stars of Tomorrow will perform at 3:30 p.m., followed by award-winning singers, brother and sister Travis and Taylor Bishop.

The raffle drawing will take place at 5 p.m. at the pavilion, and prizes include a trip to San Antonio; a gift certificate to Grand Casino Coushatta in Kinder, La.; several firearms; bicycles; a massage; a TV/VCR combo; and a fishing reel.

Local favorite Jay Cantu will sing at 5:30 p.m., and barbecue cook-off winners will be announced at 6:30 p.m.

A dance by Katy's own Stephen Brown will cap off the event beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday in the pavilion.

Arts and crafts, food and commercial booths will be featured Saturday. Among them is St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church Youth Group's new dunking booth, and also its soda booth. Boy Scout Troop 801 will sell hamburgers, and other groups will offer everything from barbecue to boudin; fish and crawfish to snow cones; and nachos and hot dogs to pastries.

Other booths include barn-wood crafts, ceramics, horseshoe lamps and book ends, jewelry, children's goods and toys, floral arrangements, homemade candles, soaps and more.

In addition, the Woodmen of the World will provide free fingerprinting.

A carnival, located directly behind the fire station, will provide plenty of activities for all ages both days.

There is no charge to attend the Beasley Bash Friday, and admission Saturday is $3 for adults, with children 5 and under admitted free of charge.

The Beasley Bash originated in 1995 as a commemoration of the town's centennial celebration, and was such a success that it immediately became an annual event.

Sponsored by the non-profit Beasley Community Committee, all proceeds from the event are distributed throughout the community via donations to the Beasley Volunteer Fire Department, Beasley Elementary School, city hall, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and local churches.

Proceeds from the Beasley bash have also been used help local families in time of need, and a scholarship fund has been established for the Beasley Bash Queen.

Since its inception, the event has grown to include the entire community. In that spirit, members of the Needville Volunteer Fire Department will man the gates and receive a portion of the profits in exchange for their assistance.
